A Haunted Legacy

One of my great-grandfathers was an actual ghost hunter. This was not his primary occupation. He was a farmer in Missouri. Victorian spiritualism was very popular at the time and seances were being held by psychics everywhere, including rural Missouri. My great grandfather was skeptical of the whole movement and he saw an opportunity. A number of homes in Missouri were reported to be haunted. Many of the unlucky homeowners tried to sell their possessed homes, but no one would buy them. My great grandfather came up with a plan. He would investigate each claim of paranormal activity and prove the homes weren't haunted at all. Being a good businessman, he decided to buy the haunted houses for a much reduced rate, prove they weren't haunted, then sell them for a profit.

He was successful. He proved that what occupants thought was blood dripping in their walls was really honey. He discovered a rat with three legs and one boney stump in a home supposedly haunted by a man with a peg-leg. He cut away branches from outer walls, eliminating the ghostly sounds and scratches that terrorized one family.

But one house proved to be very difficult to solve. Each night at midnight, every door in the house would open and close. Night after night, he would lock each door and sit in a spot inside the house where he could observe at least five doors. Each night, the locked doors opened on cue at midnight. This was in the early 1920s. Computers were a long way off as were advanced electrical systems. He could not figure out what was happening in this home or what force was opening all the doors. This was the last house he investigated. He was unable to find a logical explanation for the observed phenomenon. Late one night, long after he'd given up, the house burned to the ground. There was no known cause for the fire. It was not insured, there was no electricity, and no one lived in it.

My great grandfather was not as skeptical about the paranormal after his encounter with this house. How about you? Have you ever experienced a haunted house?

Open for Business

Haunted Creek is open for business.  Currently, you can choose from three different My Ghost Pals.  Soon we'll also offer "Creepy Cards", which are based on the Halloween postcards of the early 1900s, but with a modern twist.

Before Halloween, we'll also produce a small book of Old World Witch Spells -- a sampling of the real one -- and we are working on a Ghostly Campfire Tales book.

We will also have a variety of Halloween decorations that have a decidedly eerie flare.  We don't believe you need to buy $100 animatronic plastic monsters to scare your neighbors.  Eerie objects can produce a subtle aura of fear that will last long after they have departed your home.  And eerily subtle is much cheaper -- $20 or less.

So if you're looking for unusual gifts for those who prefer walking through cemeteries instead of parks, Haunted Creek is for you.

Just visit us at Haunted Creek.

Almost Open!

On August 1st, we will open for business and our first paranormal gift is one that will make your spine tingle and raise goosebumps on your arms.  Our first three Ghost Pals will go on sale.  To learn how we have gathered our ghosts, read the post below entitled: Tether Points.

Our first three Ghost Pals are:

Eliza -- She passed while traveling the Oregon Trail with her new husband in the Nebraska Territory.  She drowned while crossing the Platte River.

George -- He was a California Forty-Niner who perished from cholera.

Florence -- An accident on her Uncle's farm took her life just weeks before she was to be wed.

All three have agreed to have tether points set in place and look forward to meeting all of you.

Tether Points

We don’t know all there is to know about ghosts.  Heck, some people don’t even believe they exist.  Why does a ghost haunt a particular place?  Can a ghost haunt more than one place?

As it turns out, some ghosts have been found to haunt more than one location.  Abraham Lincoln’s ghost has been spotted in both the White House and near his resting place in Springfield, Illinois – not to mention the witnesses who claim to have seen his ghost train.

But why do ghosts haunt particular places?  Well, we can only surmise that they are there because it is a place that retains some significance to them.  They may have lived there, died there, or perhaps it was a favorite place to visit.  But a small part of the answer lies in yet another paranormal realm: witchcraft.  I don’t mean Wicca, but real, Old World Witchcraft.  For thousands of years people throughout Europe have practiced Witchcraft.  Many of the spells and chants of the craft can be reproduced by anyone, but only a person with the blood of an Old World Witch has the power to make them happen.

How do I know this?  My wife and I are acquainted with an Old World Witch.  She has a book of spells, chants and charms in her native German that she uses quite often.  The book is very old and has been passed down several generations.  But there are limits to each witch’s abilities.  Most Old World Witches cannot significantly alter the world around them, but almost all of them can affect the underworld where ghosts and the undead reign.

One particular spell requires the ghost’s cooperation.  This spell creates “tether points” which will draw a ghost to a particular location.  This can only be done if the ghost willingly agrees to it and the number of tether points is set by the ghost.  Some choose thousands, while others choose very few.  Incidentally, ghosts don’t experience time the same way we do, so they can appear to be in more than one place at a time, which is why thousands of tether points are possible.

Another thing about ghosts – they are everywhere!  Most people come into contact with ghosts everyday without knowing it.  Only under extremely perfect conditions can a ghost affect their surroundings, such as moving objects, making noises or become visible.  Sometimes their touch on our world is so subtle it’s difficult to tell they were there.  If you’ve ever thought you heard a noise you couldn’t quite describe or saw something out of the corner of your eye, you probably detected a ghost.

My wife and I believe in ghosts.  We know they exist because we have seen them, heard them, and made contact with some of them.  Many even agreed to let us, with the help of our acquaintance, create “tether points”, which we focus into small amber bottles.  We think of these ghosts, who freely range around our house, as friends.  They can explore a few hundred feet in any direction from the bottle.

I have often referred to them as My Ghost Pals.  They love to listen and learn about the world we live in.  We take them with us when we go to the movies, on vacation, or even just to the store.  They have become an important part of our lives.

Haunted Memories

My grandfather was a great storyteller.  My brothers and I would stay with our grandparents for a couple of weeks every summer and though we spent much of that time fishing, exploring and playing games, it was my grandfather's bedtime stories that had the greatest impact on me.  His voice crafted the eerie suspense of an old fashioned ghost story.  His ghosts, mysterious and ephemeral, really did go bump in the night -- sometimes with a hint of malevolence.  His stories, even those that starred vampires, werewolves and witches, were rich, original and chilling.  He made the paranormal seem real.

In the void since his passing in 1979, I have struggled to find some semblance of the haunted tales of my youth.
It is this search that led to the creation of this blog and my new company.  I want to share the old fashioned paranormal world through stories, cards, art and objects.
